The Winter Holiday Hoe-Down was a fun and informative event that was enjoyed by all. A variety of religions and beliefs were represented, the food was delicious, and many crafty creations were created. Homeschool Excursions hopes you can join us for future holiday parties. They provide a fantastic opportunity to share, eat, learn from others, and make new friends.
This fascinating young man explains a Native American custom that was witnessed by his father as a child. He constructed a model of a sweat hut, which was used during the winter months to keep clean. A fire was built in the center with oak and hickory, and the adults stayed in the shed for 4 to 5 hours wearing wool robes. After the ceremony, in which they smoked themselves clean, the family members gathered for a drum circle and to drink Sasafras tea.
We're in the winter spirit! Bring on the snow!!
From Melissa, we learned about the month of Ramadan, with explainations of the daily fast, customs, beliefs, and family traditions. She also brought templates for the homeschoolers to create their own Ramadan decorations.
Alessia shares her family's display, telling the story of La Befana, a nice Italian witch who is still flying around to this day looking for Jesus. On January 6th, the Three Kings came by her house on their search for the baby, and she wouldn't join them because she was too busy. She soon realized her mistake and went out to help, taking with her a bag of treats. Today, Italian kids hang stockings in the hopes of receiving goodies from La Befana. If they are good, they get candy, otherwise it's coal or garlic!
